October

Acer palmetum.

As the leaves change colour on trees and shrubs, the garden puts on a final show of flowers before winter. Acers and Japanese maple trees, in particular, help make this one of the loveliest times of the year. But whilst there is plenty to enjoy in the garden there are still plenty of jobs to do! It’s not too late to have a final cut of your hedges – in particular if you have a leylandii hedge. Don’t be caught out by the new laws or fall out with your neighbours over the height of your hedges – it’s better to have them cut now than pay the price later! Gardeneer can help you with this.

Cut back any flowers that have died.and clear away fallen leaves and weeds regularly to keep the garden looking tidy. Gardeneer have Tidy-up Teams who can make light work of any jobs you don’t have time for in the garden and make it look its best before winter sets in. Why not book the team in now?

Lawns

Give lawns some autumn maintenance by aerating and scarifying before the frosts arrive. Keep lawns clear of leaves to prevent clumps damaging the grass and turning it yellow, and remember not to discard the leaves as they can be used to make leaf-mould compost.

While the soil is not too wet and the soil is still warm, it is an ideal time to lay turf for new lawns. Gardeneer can undertake this or just carry out remedial work to repair worn patches or level bumps.

Flowers

Dig up and store Dahlia tubers and Gladiolus corms.

Plant trees and shrubs since this is an ideal time for these plants to settle in.

Plant bulbs such as daffodils, narcissi and Crocus now – in the garden or in patio containers.

Around the borders it is a good time to lift and divide herbaceous perennials to fill out spaces. Plant the outside sections of the clumps into fresh soil and compost and discard the central part.

Wallflowers can be planted now to produce a colourful display in spring. Ensure they are planted quite deep to help avoid them being loosened from the ground by strong autumn winds

Patios and driveways

There is no better time to get a new drive or patio. Gardeneer has a huge range of designs, colours and styles.

Plants to look out for in October

Asters, Fuchsia genii, Japanese Anemone and Chrysanthemum and Pampas Grass; and giving a real splash of red autumn colour is the Berberis shrub and Kniphofia, better known as Red Hot Poker, and Virginia Creeper.
